Pathogen agnostic strategies are an attractive medical countermeasure for both the warfighter and civilian populations. The human host response is a sensitive and specific reporter for critical illness. My view is that host-based approaches will provide translational solutions to improve outcomes in patients with sepsis or severe infections. The development of host-directed therapeutics will be facilitated through clinical research efforts that study large numbers of human subjects with disease to drive the process of discovery and translation. My current research efforts are focused on the application of multiomics technologies and functional assays to define the pathobiology of critical illness in global clinical cohorts. I currently lead a team of molecular and computational biologists and mathematicians that are developing new tools and strategies to achieve these research goals.
