Lieutenant Colonel (Doctor) Luis O. Rohena
An honors graduate of Columbia University with a BA in Biochemistry, LTC. Rohena received his medical doctorate with honors at the Ponce Health Sciences University in his native Puerto Rico. He completed his pediatric residency at Walter Reed where he was named Distinguished Graduate and his Clinical Genetics Fellowship at Columbia University Medical Center. LTC Rohena also holds a Master of Science in Management from the University of Maryland and a PhD in Higher Education Research and Administration from Texas Tech University. LTC Rohena deployed as a Brigade Surgeon as part of Operation Enduring Freedom-Spartan Shield and Operation Allies Refuge. As the sole pediatrician stationed in Qatar during the withdrawal from Afghanistan, he assisted in the processing of over 55,000 Afghan refugees, and successfully opened the first military pediatric clinic in Qatar. LTC Rohena previously served as battalion surgeon for the 1-2 SBCT and 3-2 SBCT from 2013-2018. He also holds international licenses in Hazardous Materials Management and served as CBRNE Physician expert for the 1st Medical Brigade from 2018-2019. LTC Rohena currently serves as the Deputy Chief of Pediatrics at the Brooke Army Medical Center where he assists in overseeing pediatric primary and subspecialty care for over 50,000 beneficiaries. The department also supports the DoD’s largest pediatric residency, a tri-service neonatology fellowship and the nation’s largest adolescent medicine fellowship program. LTC Rohena also serves as the Chief of Medical Genetics and Director of the Metabolic Clinic at BAMC. LTC Rohena has authored over 40 peer-reviewed publications, and over 100 abstracts and presentations. He has served as Chief Editor of Medscape since 2014. LTC Rohena was promoted to full professor of Pediatrics at the Uniformed Services University and won The Surgeon General’s Physician Recognition Award in 2023. LTC Rohena is a graduate of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College. He holds the Surgeon General’s “A” proficiency designator and is a member of the Order of Military Medical Merit. |
