Dr. Troy Akers
![]() | Dr. Akers was born in Blacksburg, Virginia. He graduated summa cum laude from Bridgewater College in Bridgewater, VA with a Bachelor of Science degree, followed by a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from Edward Via Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine in Blacksburg, Virginia. He completed a Family Medicine internship at Dwight D. Eisenhower Army Medical Center (DDEAMC) followed by his Emergency Medicine residency at the combined Dwight D. Eisenhower Army Medical Center/Medical College of Georgia program at Fort Eisenhower, Georgia. He is board certified in Emergency Medicine and a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians. While on active duty, Dr. Akers held multiple positions including operational assignments as the 1/3 AVN BN, ATK Surgeon, 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade Surgeon, 3rd Infantry Division during Operation Enduring Freedom as well as multiple hospital assignments culminating as assignment as the Chief of Emergency Medicine at Fort Eisenhower’s Department of Emergency Medicine in 2016, a position he served in until his active-duty service concluded in 2018. Dr. Akers immediately transitioned to civil service as the civilian Chief of Emergency Medicine, a position he currently holds in the Defense Health Agency. Dr. Akers serves as teaching faculty and assistant professor of Emergency Medicine at the Medical College of Georgia Dr. Akers’ military honors and awards include: Bronze Star Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Service Medal, Global War on Terror Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terror Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Combat Medical Badge, Flight Surgeon Badge, Order of Military Medical Merit, DDEAMC Emergency Medicine Resident of the Year, Honor Graduate of Army Flight Surgeon Primary Course, DDEAMC Civilian of the Year. Dr. Akers is proudly married to his high-school sweetheart Nancy and is the proud father of two daughters, Mollie (17) and Laney (14). |
