With a glint in his eye, an occasionally irreverent joke, and a lifetime commitment to serving others, Dr. David G. McLeod made a global impact researching and treating prostate cancer, while mentoring thousands of physicians and surgeons along the way.

By donating, you will help fund the continuing education of researchers and clinicians working towards better diagnostics, improved patient care and new preventive treatment and vaccines. These funds will also support translational research that moves innovations from the lab bench to the patient’s bedside to improve treatment and results. Your contribution can extend the guidance and mentorship for which Dr. McLeod was known and loved.

Dr. McLeod founded the Center for Prostate Disease Research (CPDR) at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in 1992. Under his guidance until he retired in 2016, CPDR grew into one of the world’s premier prostate patient care and research centers, home to one of the largest and most comprehensive prostate cancer databases in the U.S.

Translational research, which Dr. McLeod championed his entire career, moves scientific discoveries beyond basic theoretical research into practical applications that can potentially save lives.

About Colonel (Doctor) David G. McLeod, M.D., J.D., US Army (Ret.) (1935 - 2020)


As a visionary leader in the field of urology, Dr. McLeod ushered in a new era of prostate cancer research, combining molecular biology and clinical research at a time when there was increasing focus and controversy over prostate cancer’s optimal treatment. A highly decorated military surgeon, his distinguished career included service in both the U.S. Marine Corps and the U.S. Army. 

Prior to Dr. McLeod’s tenure at CPDR, he was the Program Director in Urology and the Chief of Urologic Oncology at Walter Reed Army Medical Center; Professor of Surgery at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences; and Clinical Professor in the Department of Surgery (Urology) at Georgetown University Medical Center. Dr. McLeod’s published work appeared in major medical journals, including Urology, the Journal of Urology, the Journal of Urologic Oncology, and the Journal of Cancer. His contributions included co-authoring multiple chapters and publications on urologic oncology, educating his students and advancing the field of research.

Dr. McLeod earned his Bachelor’s and Medical Doctorate from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. He also earned a Juris Doctorate from Northern Virginia Law School and was a member of the DC Bar and The Society of the Cincinnati in the State of Virginia. He was a long-time member of the Society of Urologic Oncology and numerous other professional societies, serving at one point as President of the American Foundation of Urologic Disease and President of the Mid-Atlantic Section of the American Urologic Association.
